![]() ![]() Update: We now have a full review of the T-Mobile Sidekick III live in our reviews channel. T-Mobile, however, is doing interesting things with HSDPA in the UK (super 3G, or 3.5G to the uninitiated), and we're looking forward to seeing what materialises from that. We've had no word this morning from the UK T-Mobile office, but our guess is that this phone won't be hitting shops anytime soon. Paris may now be wary of committing her life to a little electronic sidekick, but for rest of us, whose contact lists and personal notes are probably too boring to post on the Web, it may still be an attractive option. Details of her contact and personal notes were leaked on to the Internet as quickly as this photo of the Sidekick III has been. The Sidekick II wasn't as big a hit here as it was in the US, where it was helped along by all the publicity when Paris Hilton lost hers, much to the fury of her posh mates who started getting abusive phone calls from total strangers. The Sidekick III may or may not make it to the UK. According to these images, the third version of the chunky mobile phone with QWERTY keyboard is similar to the Sidekick II, but it's now sporting a new black section on the front, and a button on the right-hand side that looks like a track ball. But given the buzz around the Blackberry Classic-and the way that no tech brand ever seems to stay dead-don't be surprised to see a retro Sidekick revival one day soon.Yesterday a blogger posted an exclusive picture of what appears to be the new T-Mobile Sidekick 3. The 4G was discontinued in 2012 and a new Sidekick has yet to follow. In 2011, T-Mobile briefly offered a new phone called the Sidekick 4G, based on Android, bringing the whole thing full circle. Android was then acquired by Google and went on to develop the most popular smart phone operating system in the world. Danger co-founder Andy Rubin left the company in 2003 and started a company called Android. Microsoft killed off the Sidekick soon after, in favor of the short lived Microsoft Kin brand.īut that's not the end of the story. That became a fiasco in 2009 when, the year after Danger was acquired by Microsoft, a database error wiped out all of users' contacts and other info. Your contacts were backed up exclusively to Danger's own web service. The inclusion of Wi-Fi or 3G support would have been nice. The handheld continues to offers strong messaging capabilities. If you don't mind a single-core 1GHz processor and a smallish 3.5-inch screen, you can actually still pick up the Sidekick at T-Mobile's website for the time being. The phone also features stereo Bluetooth support and a 2-megapixel camera with video recording and playback. Unlike most other smart phones before and since, you couldn't sync your address book with a third party application like Microsoft Outlook. 1 0 The T-Mobile Sidekick offers customizable shells for extra personalization. But even after this addition, the phone remained incredibly restricted. Stefanie Hoffman October 16, 2009, 07:36 PM EDT Numerous Sidekick customers lost personal data such as phone numbers, calendars, photos, contact lists and personalized apps from their mobile. Eventually, much as Apple would do later, it offered an app store. Launched in 2002, the original Sidekick had a black and white screen, a full keyboard, and only a handful of applications. ![]()
